Ego and Chaos in My Upcoming Hilarious Concert
I am thrilled to announce that I will be performing in an upcoming concert organized by Source/Filter Music on Saturday, May 30th at 8pm!This isn’t your typical, buttoned-up classical performance. This time around, we are diving into something wonderfully witty and theatrical: Domenico Cimarosa’s brilliant short comic opera, The Maestro (originally Il maestro di cappella)! If you want to laugh with a bunch of musicians playfully mocking the music business—this is the show for you. The Maestro is a parody of ego and rehearsal chaos. This comic intermezzo lampoons a self-important conductor who can’t stop talking long enough to rehearse. Performed in a lively new English translation by Britta Sterling (with a dash of Italian), baritone/conductor Caleb Yanez Glickman takes on the rare challenge of conducting and starring as the flustered Maestro. The beauty of this production is its intimacy and spontaneity: it’s performed with minimal staging and without microphones. As the musicians sit and play, we have to respond to his every ridiculous whim in real-time. It’s a total breakdown of the traditional conductor-orchestra relationship, and it was an absolute blast to rehearse it yesterday!Adding to the spirit of chaos and spontaneity, I discovered at rehearsal that I’ll be taking over the Concertmaster chair—which includes a couple of flashy solos as well as helping to keep the orchestra from completely revolting against the “Maestro”!Tickets are officially live!
