Book of the week: Basilisk by Matt Wixey Basilisk is about fear. Not the fear of monsters, but the fear that the digital world made us vulnerable to forces we cannot easily see or name. That an idea, carefully constructed, might reach through a screen and alter who you fundamentally are. As such it feels like a warning disguised as a puzzle, disguised as a work of fiction. In its own unusual way, it is a rather beautiful one.#reading #books https://open.substack.com/pub/marginalspace/p/when-language-turns-against-us?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

The ‘Dr. Greta Helsing’ books by Vivian Shaw is an Urban Fantasy about Dr. Greta Helsing, a specialist in the treatment of those that go bump in the night, her friends, and patients. And a spectacle of escalation going from treating a vampire after an encounter with a hunter to angels, demons, and an accidental apocalypse in just a handful of installments which is a hard act to follow so it makes sense that the fourth book is the official end.Actually having just read that book I think it’s possible that the author lost interest in their protagonist as the bureaucracy of heaven and hell got more screen time. And that’s not even considering the six year gap between the last two books.I still like the series (more than the only other thing I’ve read by Shaw) and tentatively recommend it but part of that is because I like the idea of a Genre medical drama (even if these are only kind of that) and find the supporting cast likable.#Books #Reading #UrbanFantasy

Difficult at the moment to find rest. The usual go-to of a TV series or film aren’t doing it for me.Reading really works, I’m establishing the habit for a book to be an automatic thought when I need to unwind. But also, increasingly, music. I listen to a lot of music during a week, but it’s mostly while doing something else, rarely listening for its own sake.I’m re-discovering sitting back with with a pair of headphones, and an album. My mind wanders, but a lot of the time I can be deep in the music. I love it.Recent artists - Kacey Musgraves, Dire Straits, Cowboy Junkies.#reading #music #relaxation
